Jogwa Marathi film preview

Jogwa Jogwa explores the life of rural people Soundatti in Karnataka, who are devotees of Goddess Yellamma. Some residents of the areas known as jogtin (female) and jogta (male) — are treated as sex slaves and treated with disdain. Jogwa means alms given to a jogta or a jogtini. These people are forced by the society to give up everything and serve God. They have to rise above their sexuality and suppress all their desires. The movie also talks about a romantic encounter of a jogta.

The story is based on three novels by Dr Rajan Gavas — Chaundak, Bhandar Bhog and Charuta Sagar. Putla (Mukta Barve) is an innocent girl barely 16-17 year old, when her life takes an unexpected turn-all because of knots in her hair because of which she has to be dedicated to Goddess Yallamma.

Putla is torn between the pressures inflicted by the worsening economic strains in the family, the jears and mocking stares of the society, and the happy settled lives led by her companions. Moreover, the growing attraction she feels for a member of a dancing troupe makes matters worse.

The film has won several awards and is set to hit the theatres on September 25, 2009.The film has got the best film award in almost all major film festivals in Maharashtra.
